Bokaro: इस भीषण गर्मी में जब अधिकांश लोग एयर कंडीशनर और ठंडी जगहों की तलाश में रहते हैं, उसी समय बोकारो स्टील प्लांट (BSL) की महिला अधिकारी और कर्मचारी 50 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक तपते शॉप फ्लोर और 800 डिग्री सेल्सियस से भी अधिक तापमान पर संचालित स्टील उत्पादन इकाइयों में पूरी जिम्मेदारी के साथ डटी हुई हैं। कोक ओवन, ब्लास्ट फर्नेस और स्टील मेल्टिंग शॉप जैसे अत्यधिक चुनौतीपूर्ण विभागों में उनकी बढ़ती भागीदारी न केवल पुरानी धारणाओं को तोड़ रही है, बल्कि भारतीय इस्पात उद्योग में महिला सशक्तिकरण की नई मिसाल भी कायम कर रही है।

पुरुषों का गढ़ माने जाने वाले हॉट जोन में महिलाओं की दमदार मौजूदगी

कभी स्टील प्लांट के हॉट जोन को केवल पुरुष कर्मचारियों के लिए उपयुक्त माना जाता था, लेकिन अब यह सोच तेजी से बदल रही है। स्टील अथॉरिटी ऑफ इंडिया लिमिटेड (SAIL) की प्रमुख इकाई बोकारो स्टील प्लांट में करीब 10 हजार कर्मचारियों में लगभग छह प्रतिशत महिलाएं कार्यरत हैं। इनमें अधिकारी और गैर-अधिकारी दोनों शामिल हैं। खास बात यह है कि अब कई महिलाएं स्वेच्छा से उत्पादन प्रक्रिया की सबसे कठिन जिम्मेदारियां संभाल रही हैं।

2025 बना बदलाव का साल, पहली बार कोक ओवन में मिली वरिष्ठ महिला अधिकारियों की तैनाती

वर्ष 2025 बीएसएल के इतिहास में एक महत्वपूर्ण पड़ाव साबित हुआ। पहली बार वरिष्ठ प्रबंधक जी. स्नेहा राजू और प्रेरणा कुमारी को कोक ओवन एवं कोल केमिकल विभाग जैसे अत्यधिक गर्म और चुनौतीपूर्ण क्षेत्र में तैनात किया गया। दोनों के उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन और कार्यनिष्ठा के बाद प्रबंधन ने वरिष्ठ अधिकारी मनीषा रश्मि लिंडा को भी शॉप फ्लोर की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी। वर्तमान में सहायक महाप्रबंधक (AGM) के रूप में कार्यरत मनीषा रश्मि लिंडा की तैनाती हॉट स्ट्रिप मिल में की गई है, जो कार्यस्थल पर बदलती सोच और बढ़ते विश्वास का प्रतीक है।

हर चुनौती ने आत्मविश्वास बढ़ाया” : प्रेरणा कुमारी

वर्ष 2014 में इलेक्ट्रिकल इंजीनियरिंग में मैनेजमेंट ट्रेनी के रूप में बीएसएल से जुड़ीं 34 वर्षीय प्रेरणा कुमारी ने कहा कि उनकी यात्रा चुनौतीपूर्ण जरूर रही, लेकिन बेहद प्रेरणादायक भी। हॉट स्ट्रिप मिल के आधुनिकीकरण से लेकर कोक ओवन एवं कोल केमिकल विभाग के इलेक्ट्रिकल सेक्शन तक उन्होंने कई महत्वपूर्ण जिम्मेदारियां निभाईं। उन्होंने कहा, “प्लांट के भीतर मिलने वाली हर चुनौती ने मेरा आत्मविश्वास बढ़ाया। स्टील निर्माण आपको हर दिन मुश्किल परिस्थितियों में भी मजबूती से खड़ा रहना सिखाता है।”

वर्तमान में लगभग 150 महिला कर्मचारी प्लांट के विभिन्न उत्पादन क्षेत्रों में कार्यरत हैं, जिनमें कई महिलाएं सीधे शॉप फ्लोर पर अपनी सेवाएं दे रही हैं।

वरिष्ठ प्रबंधक जी. स्नेहा राजू का कहना है कि स्टील प्लांट एक जीवंत औद्योगिक प्रणाली है, जहां हर दिन नई तकनीकी चुनौतियों से सीखने और नेतृत्व क्षमता विकसित करने का अवसर मिलता है। उनके अनुसार, “बेहतरीन इंजीनियर वही बनता है जो कठिन परिस्थितियों में समाधान निकालना सीखता है और स्टील प्लांट इसके लिए सबसे बड़ा प्रशिक्षण केंद्र है।”

CRM-III में भी महिलाएं संभाल रहीं तकनीकी जिम्मेदारियां

बीएसएल के CRM-III विभाग में भी महिला कर्मचारी तकनीकी रूप से जटिल जिम्मेदारियां निभा रही हैं। इलेक्ट्रिकल मेंटेनेंस टीम की जेई एसोसिएट संगीता बनर्जी का कहना है कि टीमवर्क और दृढ़ संकल्प के बल पर उन्होंने इस चुनौतीपूर्ण क्षेत्र में अपनी पहचान बनाई है। मातृत्व और नौकरी की जिम्मेदारियों के बीच संतुलन बनाते हुए उन्होंने गुणवत्ता और तकनीकी प्रतियोगिताओं में राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर भी पहचान हासिल की है। वहीं, पिछले 12 वर्षों से बीएसएल में कार्यरत नीलू सिंह कहती हैं कि प्लांट को अपनी स्थापना से लगातार आगे बढ़ते देखना उनके लिए गर्व का विषय है। उनके अनुसार, “इस प्लांट की हर मशीन में हमारी मेहनत, समर्पण और जुनून की छाप दिखाई देती है।”

बदल रही है स्टील इंडस्ट्री की तस्वीर

भीषण गर्मी, धधकती भट्टियां, धुएं से भरा वातावरण और कठिन कार्य परिस्थितियां अब महिलाओं के कदम नहीं रोक पा रही हैं। बोकारो स्टील प्लांट की ये महिला अधिकारी और कर्मचारी यह साबित कर रही हैं कि क्षमता, नेतृत्व और साहस का कोई लिंग नहीं होता। आज वे सिर्फ कर्मचारी नहीं, बल्कि भारतीय इस्पात उद्योग में महिला सशक्तिकरण और बदलती कार्य संस्कृति की नई पहचान बन चुकी हैं।

Strength has no Gender, women take charge in Bokaro Steel Plant’s hottest zones

While the scorching summer forces many to remain indoors, a silent transformation is unfolding inside the blazing units of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), where women officers and employees are stepping into some of the toughest operational zones once considered exclusive to men.

Working near Coke Oven batteries, Blast Furnaces and Steel Melting Shops, considered among the hottest and toughest zones in the steel industry, these women are redefining the face of India’s industrial workforce. Amid roaring furnaces, smoke-filled shop floors and temperatures hovering around 50 degrees Celsius while core units operate beyond 800 degrees Celsius, they continue to perform with remarkable determination and courage, shattering long-held stereotypes about women in heavy industries.

“For decades, hot zones inside steel plants were seen as areas meant only for physically robust men. However, that perception is rapidly changing at BSL, one of the largest units of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Of the nearly 10,000 employees at the plant, around six per cent are women executives and non-executives. What makes the change remarkable is that many women are now voluntarily opting for the most demanding assignments in the steelmaking process,” said Manikant Dhan, BSL, chief of communication.

He added, “Around 150 women employees are posted inside the steel plant of BSL. Many of them are now working on the shop floors as well.”

The year 2025 marked a turning point when, for the first time, senior managers G Sneha Raju and Prerna Kumari were posted in the Coke Oven and Coal Chemical department among the hottest and most challenging areas in the plant. Their performance and dedication soon encouraged the management to post another senior officer, Manisha Rashmi Linda (49), at the shop floor. Currently in May, assistant general manager (AGM), Linda has been deployed in the Hot Strip Mill, reflecting a wider shift in workplace culture.

Prerna Kumari (34 ), who joined BSL in 2014 as a Management Trainee in Electrical Engineering, said the journey was challenging yet deeply fulfilling. From working in the modernisation of the Hot Strip Mill to handling responsibilities in the electrical section of Coke Oven and Coal Chemical units, she has steadily grown into a leadership role. “Every challenge inside the plant strengthened my confidence. Steelmaking teaches you resilience every single day,” she said.

Another, senior manager G Sneha Raju (36) described the steel plant as a “living industrial ecosystem” where every assignment sharpened her technical understanding and leadership abilities. “Engineering excellence comes from mastering difficult situations, and the steel plant offers that opportunity every day,” she said.

Women employees in CRM-III have been working in demanding operational environments. Sangita Banerjee, a JE Associate in the Electrical Maintenance team, said teamwork and determination helped her excel in one of the most technically demanding sectors. Despite balancing motherhood and professional responsibilities, she has earned national-level recognition in quality and technical competitions.

Another employee, Neelu Singh, who has spent 12 years at BSL, said watching the plant grow from its commissioning phase fills her with immense pride. “Every machine here carries our hard work and dedication,” she said.

For many at BSL, these women are no longer just employees working in extreme heat conditions. They have become symbols of resilience, proving that strength is defined not by gender, but by determination, skill and the courage to stand tall even in the harshest environments.
