Bokaro: The third death anniversary of veteran leader Samresh Singh was marked in Bokaro on Monday, with numerous leaders and residents offering tributes to the influential figure credited with shaping the political identity of the region. Remembered for his fearless leadership and key role in establishing the lotus as BJP’s election symbol, Singh’s legacy continues to inspire.
Bokaro MLA Shwettaa Singh said that whenever the political history of Bokaro is written, Samresh Singh’s name will naturally stand out. Affectionately known as “Dada,” he was admired for his sharp political instincts, courage, and straightforward nature. His youngest son Sangram Singh said his father’s fearless leadership, unwavering principles, and deep commitment to the people of Bokaro continue to inspire individuals and shape a lasting political legacy today.
The Lasting Symbolism of the Lotus in Indian Politics
A remarkable chapter in Indian political history is also linked to Samresh Singh. In 1977, as an Independent candidate contesting from the Bokaro Assembly seat, he received the lotus symbol at a time when the BJP had not yet been formed. He referred to the lotus as a symbol of prosperity and gained widespread public support, winning the election in his very first attempt.
Later, during the BJP’s first national convention in Mumbai in 1980, he proposed to Atal Bihari Vajpayee that the lotus be made the party’s official symbol. With backing from Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia, the lotus became the permanent election symbol of the BJP. Senior leaders still acknowledge his decisive role in shaping this identity.
A Fearless Leader Who Never Compromised on Principles
Known for his bold speeches and unwavering stand, Samresh Singh enjoyed massive public support. Though he lost the 1980 election on a BJP ticket, he made a strong comeback by winning the 1985 and 1990 Assembly elections. His identity was never tied to power, it was tied to people. Supporters admired his fearlessness, while even opponents respected his mass appeal.
A Legacy That Continues to Inspire Bokaro
As Bokaro marked his third death anniversary, residents remembered him as a leader who valued self-respect, loyalty, and the voice of the common people. His political journey remains one of the brightest chapters in Bokaro’s history. Many notable personalities and local leaders including Umakant Rajak, BD Mishra, BC Jha, Mantu Yadav, BK Choudhary, and several others paid homage during the event.
