The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced that students appearing for the 2025 Class 10 and 12 board exams must meet a minimum attendance requirement of 75%. This new mandate is part of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws under Rules 13 and 14, which all affiliated schools must strictly follow to ensure students’ eligibility for the exams.
Holistic Development Through Regular Attendance
CBSE emphasised the importance of schools as more than academic institutions, highlighting their role in students’ holistic development. Schools provide environments that foster character building, peer interaction, and life skills development, including teamwork and inclusion. Regular attendance is considered crucial to students fully benefiting from these opportunities, ensuring a balanced education.
Attendance Exemptions in Special Circumstances
While the 75% attendance rule is non-negotiable, CBSE has allowed some flexibility in exceptional cases. Students facing medical emergencies, participating in national or international sports events, or dealing with serious issues can receive up to a 25% relaxation, provided they submit the necessary documentation on time.
Strict Monitoring and Consequences of Non-Compliance
Schools are required to maintain transparency and inform both students and parents about the attendance requirements. If students fail to meet the 75% threshold without valid reasons, they could be barred from taking the board exams. CBSE warns that inspections may lead to disqualification for irregular attendance. Schools must follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and submit accurate attendance records before the final calculation, which will be made as of January 1.
