Bokaro: In a remarkable example of student-led innovation, a Class 10 student from Kedla village in Kasmar block has developed a home-based early-warning system designed to alert families and authorities about forest fires. Living amid the dense forests of Hisim Panchayat, Sushmita Kumari Murmu turned her daily reality into a mission to safeguard her surroundings.
Turning Danger Into Innovation
Sushmita’s home often witnesses sudden forest fires due to its proximity to the mountains and thick vegetation. Instead of accepting this recurring danger, she devised a project that uses sensors to detect forest fires and immediately activate a loud siren installed in her home. This alert system would give villagers crucial time to respond and help the forest department take timely action, preventing loss of life, wildlife, vegetation, and oxygen depletion.
Support From Teachers and Family
Her parents, Rajesh Kumar Murmu and Urmila Devi, expressed pride in her initiative. The idea took shape after Sushmita discussed it with her school teacher Sanjeev Kumar, who encouraged her to move forward. Later, nodal teacher Chandan Kumar helped her refine the model after Sanjeev’s transfer.
Recognition at the Block Level
The project gained attention when presented at school and soon received approval from the block-level education department, which also provided financial assistance for its construction. This support enabled Sushmita to complete her model effectively and prepare it for higher-level competitions.
Aiming for District and State-Level Success
With preparations now underway, the project will soon be uploaded for the district-level competition. If selected, it could advance to the state-level stage. Filled with hope, Sushmita believes that her environmentally focused project will earn recognition and inspire others to innovate for ecological protection.
