On Monday, the Centre made a significant announcement regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that the rules for its implementation have been notified.
The CAA, which was passed in December 2019 and subsequently received the president’s assent, had faced protests in various parts of the country. However, the law couldn’t be enforced as the necessary rules had not been notified until now.
The ministry of home affairs has notified the Citizenship Amendment Act’s (CAA) rules today, paving the way for the law’s implementation across the country. The law makes it easier for Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi refugees from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, to get Indian citizenship.
Earlier, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on ‘X’ stated – MHA will be notifying today, the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019). These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 will enable the persons eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship. The applications will be submitted in a completely online mode for which a web portal has been provided.
The announcement of these rules signifies a concrete move by the government to implement the provisions of the CAA, which aims to provide expedited citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh.
