BSL saves Rs 1000 crores annually by proper waste utilisation bags prestigious Greentech Award last monthBokaro Steel Plant (BSL), which works continuously to convert waste into wealth, also contributes to SAIL’s environmental protection measures. Utilizing waste properly as input material inside the plant and in other industries, BSL has been generating revenues of over Rs 1000 crores annually over the past few years. This year, BSL has received the prestigious Greentech Environment and Sustainability Award in the “Eco Friendly Products” Category.
This award is presented in recognition of responsible, innovative practices and initiatives towards achieving sustainable goals. Steel in itself a very eco-friendly product as it can be recycled many times without losing its properties unlike Plastic. Concerted efforts of Bokaro Steel Plant including reduction of CO2 emission by 11.7% and dust emission by 50.9% in last seven years has made BSL more eco-friendly.
Several innovative initiatives have been taken by BSL in making eco-friendly products out of waste including Rail ballast, Fly-Ash LD slag bricks, use of slag in cement making, Paver blocks out of slag and eco-friendly soil conditioners out of waste products. Recently, BSL has installed one Bio-Digester inside the Plant for conversion of Canteen waste in Bio-Gas and Manure.
Director incharge, Amarendu Prakash, executive director (ED), Works, Atanu Bhowmick and Environment Control Department (ECD) headed by GM (Environment), Navin Prakash Srivastava and Nitesh Ranjan, AGM (Environment) are all credited with successfully launching and running the Waste to Wealth mission in BSL.
