Bokaro: A new iron ore screening unit in Bokaro Steel Plant to get Iron Ore Lump of +30 mm size for use in Steel Melting Shop (SMS) was inaugurated by Executive Director (Works) Atanu Bhowmik on Monday. With the commissioning of Continuous Casting at SMS-New, production at BSL’s Slabing Mill was stopped. This resulted in a 350 ton shortage of scraps generated through the slabbing mill route.
‘To mitigate the shortage of scraps in SMS, it was felt necessary to use screened iron ore lump in convertors instead of scrap,’ said Manikant Dhan, BSL’s chief of communication. He added “A ton of screened iron ore replaces nearly three tons of scrap.”
Under the leadership of Director Incharge BSL Amarendu Prakash, FSNL installed a screening unit to handle SMS’s shortfall of scrap. Using screened Iron Ore lump in SMS will reduce the consumption of scrap for smooth steel production. GM (MRD) R Dutt and Dhananjay Kumar played a crucial role in the execution of this entire project.
