SAIL’s most profitable unit BSL faces shortage of executive directors, CGM’s running the show

Bokaro: Chief general managers (CGM’s) are now handling the roles of executive directors (EDs), after being given an additional responsibility in Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), one of the biggest steel manufacturing units of Maharatna Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Retirement and transfers of senior executives have vacated a number of senior-level positions in BSL.

The lack of manpower at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) is evident by the fact that four out of the six ED posts here are operating on an additional charge. Four departments — Medical, Project, Mines and Finance — are managed by CGMs in BSL. Meanwhile the additional charge of ED (Personnel & Administration) has been given to ED (Material Management) Vishnukant Pandey.

BSL’s ED Works, Atanu Bhowmick, has also been appointed Director-in-Charge of the Rourkela Steel Plant. He is still working on this post as he is yet to receive the final approval of the cabinet committee. The day Bhowmick will receive approval, he will also leave the post. Keeping manpower in balance remains a challenge for SAIL-BSL management.

In January, 158 non-executives and 18 executives retired from BSL. More than 70 plant workers and officers are retiring in February. Among them, there are five general managers holding key positions in the plant and township, which has raised concern among the management.
