Bokaro: With an aim to create awareness among the masses about the importance of Environment Conservation and Sustainability, various initiatives are being undertaken by Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL).
Working in this direction, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has installed a 500 Kg/Day capacity Bio-Digester near ED (Works) canteen inside BSL plant on Thursday. It will help in the proper disposal of canteen waste being generated across BSL plant. ED (Works), BK Tiwary inaugurated the facility.
The Bio-Digester will cater to Municipal Solid Waste being generated across Plant from 07 Canteens inside Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL). The canteens includes ED (W) Canteen, Coke oven canteen, Blast Furnace Canteen, New SMS Canteen, HSM Canteen, HRCF Canteen & CRM-3 Canteen. Other canteens wastes will also be added in a phased manner, said Manikant Dhan, chief of communication (COC), BSL.
The Bio-Digester plant supplied by M/s Xeon Waste Mangers LLP from Pune, has a capacity to handle 500 kg/day of heterogeneous organic waste like food waste, vegetable peels etc. and the Bio-Gas being generated is being used at ED (W) Canteen for cooking food as a replacement of LPG Cylinder. The slurry being generated from Bio-Gas Plant is being used across gardens inside the plant as manure.
The project was initiated and owned by Personnel Department, Co-ordinated by Environment & Sustainability department & executed by Project Division. ED (Works) encouraged everyone for proper segregation of dry and bio-degradable wet waste in the Plant and Township. ED (P&A) Sanjay Kumar, ED (Project) CR Mohapatra, CGM (Services), Anil Kumar & GM (Environment & Sustainability) Navin Prakash Srivastava were also present on this occasion.
It’s noteworthy to mention that GHG emission due to improper disposal of Municipal Solid Waste is approximately 1.23 tonnes /T of Municipal Waste. So the project will help in reduction of more than 220 Tons (1.23 X365X0.5) of GHG/annum, will replace one commercial LPG Cylinder daily with Bio-Gas& will provide organic manure to Gardens across the Plant.
“Due to various initiatives of BSL pertaining to environment & Sustainability, BSL was adjudged winner of Greentech Environment Excellence Award in the “Environment Protection” Category during 2022 by Greentech Foundation,” said Dhan.
