Bokaro: “Never consider failure as your weakness. Turn every setback into a stepping stone towards success.” This inspiring message was shared by DPS Bokaro alumnus Shubham Kumar Mahato, who secured All India Rank 142 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 and has been selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

Shubham, a student of the 2015 batch of DPS Bokaro, visited his alma mater on Wednesday after achieving the remarkable feat. During an interaction programme, he shared his journey of perseverance, struggles and determination with the students, motivating them to pursue their dreams with confidence and dedication.

Five Attempts, One Dream: Journey Towards IAS
Addressing students under the guest lecture programme, Shubham revealed that his journey towards becoming an IAS officer was not easy. He had cleared the UPSC examination earlier as well, but could not secure IAS allocation. However, his dream of serving the nation directly through the administrative service kept him motivated.
He said that after his initial setback, he took a break, analysed his shortcomings and worked harder with renewed determination. After four attempts, he finally achieved his dream in his fifth attempt by securing a prestigious rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025. “Every failure teaches us something valuable and motivates us to perform better. Instead of losing hope, one should learn from mistakes and continue moving forward,” Shubham told the students.
Set Goals, Believe in Yourself and Work Consistently
Guiding the students about competitive examinations, Shubham advised them to set clear goals and prepare with complete dedication and self-belief. He said that success requires honesty towards oneself, consistent efforts and patience. “Teachers can guide you, provide strategies and share useful techniques, but regular practice and hard work have to be done by you. If you continue giving your best efforts, success will definitely come one day,” he said.
Balanced Use of Mobile and Internet is Key
Shubham also highlighted the importance of using technology wisely. He advised students to maintain a balance while using mobile phones and the internet. He said that technology can become a powerful tool for learning and preparation if used properly, but its misuse can become one of the biggest obstacles in the path of success.
During the interactive session, students asked Shubham several questions related to UPSC preparation strategies, career choices and the challenges faced during competitive examinations. He answered their queries and guided them about planning and preparation methods.
Principal Calls Shubham a Role Model for Students
DPS Bokaro Principal Dr A.S. Gangwar appreciated the initiative and described successful alumni like Shubham as a source of inspiration for current students. He said that the school regularly organises such programmes to provide students with guidance and motivation from achievers. He congratulated Shubham for his outstanding achievement and wished him a bright future ahead.
Shubham’s journey from a DPS Bokaro student to an IAS officer has once again proved that determination, resilience and continuous effort can transform dreams into reality.
