BSL focused effort in effective utilisation and minimisation of solid waste bags prestigious Greentech Award


Bokaro: The steel major, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has bagged the prestigious Greentech Environment Award 2020 in “Waste Minimisation” category. BSL, a unit of Steel Authourity of India Limited (SAIL), was praised for utilising 98.12 percent of its generated solid waste. With focused effort, BSL has developed a potential market of solid wastes in Jharkhand and is earning more than Rs 550 crores revenue annually by selling its wastes.

Apart from earning this huge amount, the company is also saving around Rs 250-280 crores yearly by recycling or reusing these solid wastes again in its production process. These solid wastes are generated in different units inside the plant during the steel-making process. The net sales of the BSL in 2019-20 was Rs 13,212 Crores. Of which, BSL has earned about Rs 550 crores by selling its solid wastes in the open market, said a BSL officer.

Greentech Environment Awards 2020 is presented by Greentech Foundation in recognition of responsible, innovative practices and initiatives towards achieving sustainable goals. The credit for the accolade goes to the vision of Director incharge of BSL, Amarendu Prakash who reaffirms the importance of “Generation of wealth from waste” in the circular economy.

Believing in it, BSL has developed a potential market by attracting prospective buyers for its various solid wastes in the past couple of years. They termed these solid wastes as ‘by-product’. There are eight different kinds of solid wastes generated in the BSL plant. These are BF Slag, LD Slag, waste refractories, Ferric Oxide, ESP (RMP) Dust, BF Flue Dust, Mill Scale and coke breeze.

Chief of communication, BSL, Manikant Dhan said “In a year 25 lakhs tonnes of solid waste is generated in BSL. But we utilised our 98.12 percent of those annually generated wastes one way or other. The Greentech award is a reflection of the concerted efforts made by BSL in waste utilization including innovative work done in the field of slags, implementation of zero discharge projects and improvement in environmental performance parameters”.

Chief General Manager (Utilities) RK Agrawal received the award on behalf of BSL at Mahabalipuram. On Tuesday, executive director (Works) A Bhowmik, general manager, ECD, Navin Prakash Srivastava, AGM, Nitesh Ranjan presented the trophy and certificate to the director incharge. Director in charge praised his team of Environment Control Department (ECD), whose concerted effort bags them the prestigious award, apart from annual revenue growth to the company.

The jury member comprised Ex-Chief factory Inspector, Ex-MD Canara bank, Ex-Director, ONGC and other eminent personalities. Based on the application filed and presentation given in front of Jury, BSL has been declared the winner of the “Greentech Environment Award 2020”.
