Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a leading player in the steel industry, has proudly secured the 23rd Greentech Environment Awards-2023 in the distinguished “Environmental Excellence” category. The accolade, conferred by the Greentech Foundation, underscores BSL’s unwavering dedication to responsible and innovative environmental practices, aligning with broader sustainability objectives.
Rigorous evaluation process culminates in BSL’s Triumph
The Environment Protection and Sustainability (ECS) department spearheaded BSL’s entry into the “Environmental Excellence” category. During the presentation on November 07, Nitesh Ranjan, Assistant General Manager (Environment), eloquently presented BSL’s initiatives before the esteemed jury. Subsequently, Navin Prakash Srivastava, General Manager (Environment), adeptly addressed all queries raised by the jury members.
The jury, comprised of luminaries including former Directors of ONGC, lauded Bokaro Steel Plant’s dynamic efforts in environmental protection and its strides towards adopting sustainable methods in steel manufacturing. The final verdict named SAIL, Bokaro Steel Plant, as the recipient of this esteemed award, to be formally conferred during the “23rd Annual Greentech Environment Summit – 2023” in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, on November 23-24, 2023.
Steel Industry Eco-Frontiers: BSL sets new standards
Steel, inherently eco-friendly due to its recyclability, stands as a beacon of sustainability. BSL, in tandem with its commitment to green practices, achieved commendable sustainability parameters during 2022-23.
Noteworthy figures include a PM emission load of 0.51 Kg/TCS, specific effluent discharge at 0.236 m3/TSS, and specific water consumption of 3.38 m3/TCS. Over the last three fiscal years, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) successfully curtailed particulate matter emissions by 12.07% and slashed specific waste discharges by an impressive 77.3%.
Waste to Wealth: BSL’s ingenious solutions
BSL’s solid waste utilisation soared to an unprecedented 103.21% in 2022-23, a benchmark within the SAIL conglomerate. The plant has implemented innovative approaches to convert waste into valuable resources, such as using LD slag for rail ballast, creating fly-ash LD slag bricks, incorporating slag in cement production, crafting paver blocks from slag, and developing eco-friendly soil conditioners from waste by-products.
Notably, Bokaro Steel Plant has adopted the inventive use of decanter tar sludge, a waste product, to minimise coal consumption and enhance coke-oven productivity.
Revenue from Waste: BSL’s strategic leadership
Under the astute leadership of Director-in-charge Atanu Bhowmik, ED Works, BSL, B K Tiwary and his team of ECS department headed by Navin Prakash Srivastava initiated a groundbreaking campaign to convert waste into wealth. This initiative not only aligns with national commitments for renewable energy but has also contributed significantly to BSL’s revenue, amounting to Rs 192.93 crore.
Towards a Green Horizon: Bokaro’s vision for renewable energy
In pursuit of India’s ambitious renewable energy targets for FY 2022-23, Bokaro Steel Plant has identified the cooling pond area for the establishment of a floating solar power plant. Simultaneously, the plant is actively fostering operational excellence and energy efficiency to achieve net neutrality, showcasing its commitment to sustainable practices.
Chief of communication, BSL, Manikant Dhan said, BSL’s multifaceted approach towards environmental stewardship and sustainability positions it as a trailblazer in the steel industry, setting new benchmarks for eco-friendly operations and responsible manufacturing.
