In a compelling tale of determination and talent, Bokaro’s promising right-arm fast bowler, Vikas Kumar, has achieved a significant milestone by securing a spot in the prestigious Ranji Trophy, organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This remarkable achievement marks a transformative journey for Vikas, who hails from a financially struggling family of Bansgoda in Bokaro.

A Challenging Background:

Father of Vikas Kumar

Vikas Kumar’s story is one of overcoming adversity. Born into a family facing financial hardships, Vikas’s father, Kamaldev, earns a living as a potter, crafting and selling earthen utensils. His mother, Bhagwati Devi, takes care of their household.

Early Passion Ignites:
From a young age, Vikas displayed an ardent passion for cricket, frequently engaging in matches with older children in his neighborhood. Recognising his potential, his elder brother, Pankaj, played a pivotal role by enrolling Vikas in the Sector-3 Bokaro Cricket Coaching Academy. This decision marked a turning point in Vikas’s life, opening doors to a world where his cricketing skills flourished.

Balancing Education and Cricket:
While pursuing his cricket dreams, Vikas managed to complete his early studies at Matriculation High School, Bansgoda, in 2015. Continuing his academic journey, he successfully completed his Intermediate 12th from Bokaro Steel City College. Graduating from the Indira Gandhi National Open University in 2022 showcased Vikas’s commitment to both education and his cricketing aspirations.

Representing Jharkhand Under-23:
Prior to his Ranji Trophy selection, Vikas Kumar had already proven his mettle by representing the Jharkhand Under-23 team during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons. These early successes laid the foundation for his journey to the senior team.

Inspired by Bumrah:
Sharing his aspirations, Vikas Kumar revealed that he considers Jasprit Bumrah, a key player in the Indian team, as his role model. His ultimate dream is to represent the Indian cricket team, bringing glory to his family and hometown of Bokaro.

Gratitude and Acknowledgments:
Vikas attributes his success to the unwavering support and guidance of his elder brother, Pankaj. During challenging times, Pankaj’s encouragement kept Vikas focused on his cricketing goals. Vikas also expressed gratitude to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) and the team trainers for their role in his development.

The Next Challenge Awaits
Vikas Kumar’s next challenge is set to unfold as the Jharkhand senior team gears up to face Saurashtra (Gujarat) in the opening match of the Ranji Trophy on January 5 in Rajkot. With dreams of contributing to a Jharkhand team victory, Vikas stands ready to make a mark on the domestic cricket stage.

Vikas Becomes the Fifth Player Selected for Jharkhand’s Team
In a testament to Bokaro’s cricketing prowess, four players – Kumar Kushagra, Kumar Devvrat, Aditya Singh, and Aryaman Sen – have already secured their spots in the 18-member Jharkhand team. Adding to this impressive lineup, Vikas Kumar now joins as the fifth player, further solidifying Bokaro’s contribution to Jharkhand’s cricketing success.

Vikas Kumar’s journey from the modest lanes of Bokaro to the Ranji Trophy exemplifies the triumph of passion, dedication, and familial support. As he steps onto the cricketing arena, Bansgoda and Bokaro eagerly anticipate witnessing the promising cricketer’s impact on the game and the potential glory he may bring to their region.
