Religious Rituals and Multicultural Harmony

Devotees actively engaged in prayers alongside the temple priests, immersing themselves in the spiritual ambiance created by Vedic mantras. Notably, this religious fervor transcended boundaries as members of diverse communities joined in the prayer ceremony. Dr. Suresh Babu, a dedicated member of Ayyappa Seva Sangam, shared insights into the inclusive nature of the event, emphasizing that the religious proceedings were followed by a communal feast within the temple premises.

Culinary Extravaganza: Prasad Delights Over 5,000 Attendees

A highlight of the celebration was the sumptuous prasad, a traditional platter that included an array of Kerala delicacies such as rice, sambhar, papadam, payasam, and pickles. The feast, enjoyed by a crowd exceeding 5,000 attendees, received high praise for its authenticity and flavor.

Ragini Srivastava, the wife of a BSL officer present at the Sree Ayyappa Temple, expressed her sense of blessing and admiration for the grandeur of the festival. Preserving Kerala’s Essence in Bokaro: A Glimpse into the Malayali Presence

Since the establishment of Bokaro township, the 1980s witnessed the arrival of around 2,000 Keralite families who migrated to work at the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL). Post-retirement, many returned to their roots, yet approximately 200 Keralites continue to reside in the town. These residents play a pivotal role in preserving the cultural essence of Kerala, celebrating festivals and sharing their traditions with fellow residents.

Diverse Participation: Principals, Officials, and Community Leaders Unite

The religious function witnessed widespread participation, with principals, teachers from various schools, senior BSL officials, businessmen, traders, and other community members actively engaging in the celebratory event. This diverse congregation further underlined the communal harmony and shared festivities that define Makar Sankranti at Sree Ayyappa Temple.

Cultural Significance Beyond Bokaro

Dr. Suresh Babu shed light on the broader cultural context, drawing parallels with the renowned Sabarimala shrine in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district. He highlighted the annual pilgrimage of half a million devotees who converge to witness the Makaravilakku festival, featuring the procession of thiruvabharanam (Ayyappan’s sacred ornaments). The Ayyappa Temple in Bokaro, beyond its religious significance, has become a prominent landmark, attracting both devotees and curious visitors.

General Manager of BSL’s Electrical Department, Rajul Halkarni, present at the celebration, praised the impressive and memorable aspects of the event, from the delectable food to the meticulous way in which the Keralite community orchestrated their functions.

The Keralites’ contribution to education was also noted, with the Sree Ayyappa Public School providing quality education to the local society. The celebration at Sree Ayyappa Temple not only resonates with the Malayali community but also serves as a symbol of cultural diversity and unity in Bokaro.
