‘Performer’ Bhowmick takes charge as DIc Rourkela, Crisis of ED’s in BSL deepens

Atanu Bhowmick, one of Bokaro Steel Plant’s most popular executive directors (Work), has become Director Incharge of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). He assumed charge on Saturday. Bhowmick started working for SAIL in the Blast Furnace Department of RSP, and is now leading RSP as DIC. His contributions to BSL as an ED were impressive.

Though his promotion proved to be a great asset to the Maharatna SAIL, the crisis for good EDs in BSL continues to deepen. Bhowmick has played a crucial role in turnaround of BSL from the level when its production was curtailed almost to 50 percent during Phase-1 of Covid-19 to today when BSL’s Profit Before Tax (PBT) in 3Q of FY19 recorded around Rs 987 Crores, the highest among all the five plants of SAIL.

SAIL has given Chief General Manager (Services), BSL, Sanjay Kumar the additional responsibility of Executive Director (Works) in addition to his existing responsibilities.

Bokaro Steel Plant is facing a severe shortage of executive directors (EDs) at a time when it is preparing for a major modernization effort. Five of the six ED posts at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) operate on additional charges because of a lack of manpower. A total of five departments – Medical, Works, Project, Mines, Finance, and Personnel & Administration – of BSL lack full-time ED’s.

CGMs (chief general managers) run the show virtually. Many senior-level positions at BSL have been vacated due to retirements and transfers of senior executives. The company faces this crisis at a time when it is making high profits and has planned improvements to increase its production capacity.

Recently, BSL’s modernisation projects have received a green light from the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF), which include installing new Oxygen Plants, Sinter Plants, Coke Over Batteries and increasing the production capacity of Steel Melting Shop-3. In addition to this, SAIL plans to expand units in the plant to increase capacity in order to achieve vision 2030.
