Sample taken for testing of uranium-like substance on the order of High Court


Bokaro: A team of scientists from three research centers on Tuesday took samples of alleged uranium like substance for testing, which was seized in the month of June, on orders of the High Court. Justice Sanjay Prasad of the Ranchi High Court, while hearing the bail of the accused in the case ordered an inquiry on December 3. A uranium-like substance was ordered to be investigated by the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, the Indira Gandhi Atomic Research Center Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu or the Raja Ramanna Research Center Indore.

Sources said, on Tuesday, the scientists from all three locations came together with their colleagues. The alleged uranium-like substance was kept at the Harla police station. The scientists from the three research centers along with their team members brought the material from the Harla police station to the Bokaro civil court. Besides the judicial officers, it was opened before the DC-SP and DSP of NIA, and again a sample was taken for examination. As ordered by the court, the process was also videotaped.

It is mentioned that, on June, 10- The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) had said that the unidentified material seized in Bokaro is not uranium or radioactive in nature. It, however, did not specify what the material or mineral was. The Mumbai-based DAE’s clarification came after the Bokaro police said 6kg of a yellow mineral suspected to be uranium had been seized on June 2.
