Upholding River Conservation: Advocating sustainable practices for environmental integrity


In a session convened by Deputy Commissioner Jadhav Vijaya Narayan Rao on Wednesday at the Collectorate office room, the District Ganga Committee convened to address river conservation strategies.

The gathering saw the attendance of key officials including Additional Municipal Commissioner Chas, Saurav Kumar Bhuvaniya, and Sub-Divisional Officer Chas, Om Prakash Gupta, alongside Nodal Officer of Namami Gange, Shakti Kumar.

**Identifying River-Dependent Communities**

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of identifying communities and farmers reliant on the river’s resources and residing along its banks.

Directives were issued to facilitate training and capacity-building initiatives, collaborating with training agencies to impart knowledge on advanced farming techniques such as greenhouse farming and mixed cropping patterns.

**Promoting Pollution-Free Practices**

Efforts to mitigate river pollution were discussed, focusing on the promotion of natural farming practices within a 5-kilometer radius along both banks of the Damodar River. Encouragement was given to adopt natural fertilizers over chemical alternatives to preserve biodiversity.

**Upcoming Swachhta Pakhwada Initiative**

Under the ambit of the ‘Namami Gange’ scheme, plans were outlined to conduct Swachhta Pakhwada from 16.03.2024 to 31.03.2024, as per the annual action plan 2023-24 issued by the National Clean Ganga Mission, New Delhi. Special campaigns targeting educational institutions, youth, women, and the general populace were proposed to raise awareness and foster community participation.

**Preventing Urban Waste Discharge**

Additional Municipal Commissioner Chas, Saurav Kumar Bhuvaniya, was briefed on the corporation’s efforts to prevent urban waste discharge into rivers and urged to take effective measures to combat it. Representatives from relevant departments were present, reflecting a concerted effort towards river conservation and management.
