Director incharge Amarendu Prakash heads three of SAIL’s most important units


Bokaro: Director incharge Amarendu Prakash is now responsible for two of the most vital plants of Maharatna Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) including Bokaro and Rourkela Steel Plants in addition to all the SAIL Mines located in Jharkhand and SAIL Collieries located in both Jharkhand and West Bengal earlier under the Raw Materials Division (RMD). Prakash will now also be responsible for Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) from Sunday.

As one of the youngest and most popular directors in SAIL, Prakash is a popular figure. The quick turnaround of BSL under his leadership after being appointed in November, 2020, has been praised. BSL, which was previously in loss, reported the highest earning in SAIL in the last financial year 2020-21.

Seeing Prakash’s mettle, SAIL has given him additional charge of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) after Chief executive officer (CEO) of RSP, Deepak Chattraj retired on, July 31, said sources. Mines and Collieries have come under him w.e.f 1st July.

Prakash has been given the responsibility of RSP for the next three months till the SAIL management appoints a new director incharge there. Prakash took over the charge of RSP online on Saturday. Sources said, apart from visiting RSP frequently, Prakash will monitor RSP production and deal with the department affairs online.

It is mentioned that, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has a production capacity of 4.5 MT. Rourkela Steel Plant is producing 4.5 million tonnes of Hot Metal and 4.2 Million Tonnes of Crude Steel. SAIL is operating 8 iron ore mines and 2 flux mines spread over Jharkhand, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh to supply Iron ore, Limestones and Dolomite to SAIL steel plants in eastern sector of the country. SAIL iron ore mines are located at Kiriburu, Meghahatuburu, Gua and Chiria in Jharkhand, and at Bolani, Barsua, Taldih and Kalta in Odisha. Flux mines are located at Tulsidamar in Jharkhand, and at Kuteshwar in Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, two executive directors (EDs) have also retired in BSL. Of those EDs retired includes, the head of the Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), Dr. AK Singh and ED Finance DK Saha. With SAIL yet to appoint any Executive Director in BGH, at present, the senior-most Dr. Pankaj Sharma has been given the charge.

Meanwhile, Chief general manager (CGM) Suresh Rangani has been given charge of ED Finance in BSL. It is said that SAIL management will issue a promotion order from CGM to ED in October. After this, new officers will be posted on the post of ED lying vacant in different units including BSL. Meanwhile, till then the post of ED is being replenished by giving additional charges to CGM level officers.
