‘Greentech Award 2022’ goes to Bokaro Steel for creating eco-friendly products from steelmaking waste


Bokaro: Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) has added another feather in its cap by winning the prestigious Greentech Environment & Sustainability Award 2022 in Environment ProtectionCategory. Greentech Environment & Sustainability Awards 2022 is presented in recognition of responsible, innovative practices and initiatives towards achieving sustainable goals.

BSL’s Environment Control Department (ECD) had filed application on behalf of the plant in Environment Protectioncategory. Presentation was done by AGM (Environment) Nitesh Ranjan in front of Jury members on 21st July 2022 and queries raised by jury members were addressed by his senior GM (Environment), Navin Prakash Srivastava.

The Jury was quite impressed with the dynamic initiatives of Bokaro Steel Plant for Environment Protection and its efforts to create Eco-Friendly products out of Waste materials generated during the steel making process.

The jury member consists of Ex-Chief factory Inspector, Ex-MD Canara Bank, Ex-Director ONGC and other eminent personalities. Based on the application filed and presentation given, the Jury Members have recommended M/s. Steel Authority of India Ltd, Bokaro Steel Plant as WINNER for outstanding achievements in Environment Protection Category.

The award will be presented during “22nd Annual Greentech Environment & Sustainability Summit” scheduled on  23rd  August 2022 at Vivanta by Taj, Guwahati.

Steel in itself a very eco-friendly product as it can be recycled many times without losing its properties unlikely plastic. BSL has achieved best ever sustainability parameters during 2021-22 with Specific CO2 emission as 2.47 T/TCS, PM emission load 0.53 Kg/TCS, Specific Effluent discharge 0.248 m3/TSS and Specific Water consumption 3.40 m3/TCS.

Concerted efforts of Bokaro Steel Plant have resulted in achieving 29.33 % reduction in particulate matter emission and 85.09% reduction in specific effluent discharge during last three financial years. Solid Waste Utilization also increased to 100% during 2021-22 which is highest across.

Innovative initiatives have been taken in creating wealth  out of waste including use of LD slag as Rail Ballast, Fly-Ash LD slag bricks, use of slag in cement making, Paver blocks out of slag and eco-friendly soil conditioners out of waste products.

Recently, Bokaro Steel started use of Decanter Tar Sludge- a waste product for reducing the consumption of coal & enhancing productivity of Coke-Oven resulting in annual savings of  Rs. 5.67Crores.

It is noteworthy that under the leadership of Director-Incharge Amarendu Prakash, BSL has taken the drive for conversion of Waste to Wealth and have earned substantial revenue during last few years by proper waste utilization and its use as input material inside plant and in other industries.

To achieve the ambitious target of 500 GW of Renewable Energy by 2030 as committed by India in COP26, Bokaro has also identified Cooling Pond area for installation of floating solar power plant for which Detailed Project Report is under preparation.

The Jury members also evaluated the contribution of Nitesh Ranjan, AGM, Environment in the field of Environment & Sustainability and declared him as the winner for outstanding achievements in “Environment Champion of the Year” category.

Nitesh Ranjan is on the Board of Governors of Sustainability Development Forum, IEI, Jharkhand. He will be felicitated by Greentech Foundation on 23rd August 2022 at Guwahati. Director Incharge BSL has congratulated BSL collective for this achievement which reaffirms Bokaro Steel’s commitment towards sustainable development & with focus on Eco-friendly steel production and Generation of Wealth from Waste in this era of circular economy.
